Foreign influence
Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, both the landscape and the climate have made Alassio an ideal tourist resort for the English.
Important changes in the outline of Alassio are due to the presence of families like the Gibbs, the MacMurdos and the Hanburys: splendid villas were built on the hills and in town and in the area near the railway station they built the Anglican church, the library which represent examples of English architecture, still intact. Not to forget the “Richard West” art-gallery in Viale Hanbury.
At the beginning of the 20th century, therefore, Alassio was the resort frequented by top class Italian and foreign tourists, above all English which has left a testimony of its presence in the numerous villas and palaces built in Liberty style.
Walking around the town you may happen to see elegant railings with their sinuous lines, floral decorations and windows of a particular shape with give the town a nostalgic elegance.

The Tower
We can often see along the Ligurian coast towers and ramparts, most of the time abandoned or in ruins. Yet their functions were once fundamental: to sight and defend the coast from the ferocious pirate raids. An example of these is the one at Borgo Coscia in Alassio; it was built by the Genoese in the 16th century, and it still stands out with its powerful round shaped structure, right in the heart of the Ligurian town.

The tower of Vegliasco
Among the towers let us point out the one at Vegliasco which appears on the coat of arms of the town: it is of ancient origin and its first owners were the Aleramos (967). The tower has a conical shape, it is decorated with an embrasure crown and is one of the most beautiful in the whole district, a destination of frequent excursions.

Alassio's station
Built according to the project of Ing. Manfredini. It is in Liberty style with a central turret, relief decorations on the windows with part of the cladding made of stone. The first class waiting room is completely furnished with sofas, easy chairs antique furniture and large mirrors as well as a Murano glass chandelier.
